SECOS Millennium Institute Opens Postdoctoral Call in Tourism, Coastal Development, and Environmental Economics

The ANID center of excellence has opened a selection process for a full-time position focused on interdisciplinary research on coastal tourism, environmental economics, and development in coastal areas, integrating innovative methods, fieldwork, and collaboration with local communities.

The SECOS Millennium Institute in Coastal Socio-Ecology has announced the opening of a new international call for a postdoctoral researcher in the areas of Coastal Tourism, Environmental Economics, and Coastal Development, with the aim of strengthening interdisciplinary research focused on the sustainability of Chile’s coastal territories.

The call offers a full-time position for 18 months, with the possibility of extension up to 36 months through the successful award of competitive funding (for example, ANID Postdoctoral grants). The selected researcher will join the Coastal Development Socio-Ecological System within SECOS, a program that studies the challenges of artisanal fisheries, aquaculture, and coastal development from social, ecological, and economic perspectives.

Research lines include the valuation of natural capital and biodiversity for coastal planning; the analysis of economic trade-offs between tourism, conservation, and other coastal uses; the evaluation of climate change impacts on coastal tourism and potential adaptation strategies, including nature-based solutions; as well as the study of tourist preferences, behavior, and willingness to pay for marine and coastal conservation.

From a methodological perspective, SECOS is developing innovative approaches such as choice modeling supported by virtual reality and eye-tracking technologies, alongside applied economic analysis and intensive fieldwork in small- and medium-scale coastal socio-ecological systems.

The call is open to researchers holding a PhD in Economics, Environmental Economics, Ecological Economics, or related disciplines, with experience in economic or market valuation, applied econometrics, socio-economic analysis of environmental issues, or public policy evaluation. The selected candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of researchers and with local coastal communities.

The position will be based at one of SECOS’s partner institutions in Chile, preferably in the city of Concepción (either at the University of Concepción or the Universidad del Desarrollo), and will involve fieldwork.

Applications must be submitted by March 17, 2026, to postulaciones@socioecologiacostera.cl
, including a CV, motivation letter, degree certificates, research plan, and academic references. All materials must be submitted in the format specified in the call and in English, as indicated on the SECOS website.
