06 Jun Position Announcement: Postdoctoral Fellow in “Mussel aquaculture and global change”
A postdoctoral position as part of the Coastal Social-Ecological Millennium Institute (SECOS) is available.
DURATION: Full time. 18 months (with option for extension until 36 months (i.e. through competitive Postdoc ANID grants).
DESCRIPTION: SECOS Millennium Institute is formed by a multi‐disciplinary team of scientists from several Chilean universities, focused on costal sustainability. Main objectives of SECOS are to understand global, regional and local drivers of change; the social-ecological conditions that hinder sustainability; and to test and implement actions that unravel such conditions. Our work plan to accomplish these objectives, has been organized through the study of small- and medium-scale social-ecological experimental units, or learning platforms, which tackle key issues in artisanal fisheries, shellfish aquaculture, and coastal development as social-ecological systems (SES). In particular, we look for a postdoctoral fellow to be part of the aquaculture SES, specifically focusing on Mussel Aquaculture and multiple environmental/socioeconomic stressors (e.g. ocean warming, ocean acidification, deoxygenation, pollution, markets, etc.) and adaptive capacity. Post-doctoral research could be directed towards one of the following areas:
- Characterization of the spatial/temporal environmental/oceanographic variability (i.e. temperature, salinity, oxygen, chlorophyll, pH, etc.) in mussel farming areas of Southern Chile.
- Field and laboratory experiments on mussel physiology and multiple-stressors.
- Pollution assessment and ecotoxicological studies in mussel farming areas.
- Human dimensions of mussel aquaculture and global change.
The successful applicant can be based in any one of the SECOS associated institutions, both in Santiago de Chile (i.e. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile or Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez) and Concepción city (Universidad del Desarrollo, Universidad del Biobío, or Universidad de Concepción). Fieldwork will be required in Southern Chile (i.e. Chiloé, Los Lagos Region).
BACKGROUND: Ph.D., with a strong background in any of the disciplines involved in the scientific themes previously described; e.g. oceanography, marine biology, ecology, ecotoxicology, sociology, among others. The postdoc researcher will interact closely with senior scientists from different disciplines and local shellfish farmers.
