LAOCA Regional School 2025 Opens Call for Researchers from Latin America
From November 10 to 14, 2025, the intensive course “Unraveling the Impact of Coastal Deoxygenation and Acidification in the Latin American Region: From Physical and Chemical Perspectives to Evolutionary Implications” will take place in Puerto Ángel, Mexico. This training opportunity is aimed at PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working on topics related to deoxygenation and acidification in coastal marine ecosystems.
Latin America has emerged as a global hotspot for studying these processes. The expansion of oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) and coastal acidification, driven by climate change and human activities, poses serious threats to marine biodiversity, fisheries, and the communities that depend on the ocean. In this context, it is urgent to train a new generation of researchers capable of addressing these challenges from an interdisciplinary perspective.
LAOCA School 2025 is organized by Cecilia Chapa-Balcorta (Universidad del Mar, Mexico), Cristian A. Vargas (Universidad de Concepción and Millennium Institute SECOS, Chile), and Rodrigo Kerr (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, Brazil). The course seeks to contribute to this goal by offering a comprehensive program that covers the physical, chemical, and biological foundations of these phenomena, as well as their ecological, evolutionary, and social impacts. The program includes theoretical classes, real data analysis, and interdisciplinary discussion sessions with expert academics from the region.
Eighteen participants will be selected, with partial funding available for up to eight of them. In addition to strengthening individual capacities, the School aims to foster scientific collaboration networks across Latin America to advance the understanding and management of climate change impacts in coastal zones.
