11 Aug Santiago Gets Ready for Another Winter Full of Fun Science
The second edition of the science outreach fair “Winter with Science” at the Library of Santiago is back—this time with more than 40 institutions offering interactive stands, board games, popular science books, and audiovisual materials. Save the date: July 31, 2025!
Imagine a single knowledge-filled space surrounded by science. A place lined with books and interactive exhibits on Antarctic science, coastal ecology, active volcano eruptions, the secrets of the stars, Chilean ecology and biodiversity, optical research, immunology, data science, mathematics, the universe and celestial bodies, artificial intelligence for health, intercultural and Indigenous studies, and many other fields of knowledge.
This and much more is Winter with Science, a true science outreach festival, completely free of charge, held at the end of July at the Library of Santiago.
“With the premise that ‘science that is communicated exists’, we—a group of ANID scientific centers—gather to open a new space for science outreach in the Metropolitan Region, during the cold winter months, in an emblematic venue like the Library of Santiago. We also want school audiences to get to know this free knowledge space in our capital,” says Evelyn Nahuelhual, general coordinator of Winter with Science and director of the Comunidad InGenio program at ISCI.
This year, the science communicator notes, around 40 institutions from across the country have been invited to participate with different approaches to science communication: interactive stands from various fields of knowledge, board games, popular science books, and/or audiovisual materials showcasing the scientific research being carried out in Chile.
Bringing Science Closer
Marcela Valdés Rodríguez, Director of the Library of Santiago, explains: “This public space has been around for 20 years and has become a hub for community gatherings and guided tours for educational institutions in the region. But it is also a privileged space to bring science closer to the girls, boys, and teenagers who will visit us during the new edition of Winter with Science.”
During the fair—which will run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.—32 scientific stands will be available, presenting knowledge in applied ecology, astrophysics, artificial intelligence, seismology, oceanography, integrative biology, medicine, coastal engineering, geology, environmental microbiology, chemistry, and more. In addition, there will be over 15 books, 5 board games, and a series of documentaries and audiovisual materials. Delegations from schools across the Metropolitan Region are expected, bringing together more than 2,000 children and teenagers.
This initiative is organized by scientific centers funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID): the Millennium Institute for Research in Optics (MIRO), the Millennium Institute of Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for Health (iHEALTH), the Millennium Institute of Astrophysics (MAS), the Millennium Institute for Volcanic Risk Research (CKELAR), the Institute for Complex Engineering Systems (ISCI), the Millennium Institute for Biodiversity of Antarctic and Subantarctic Ecosystems (BASE), and the Library of Santiago. Partners include ANID, Par Explora RM Norte, Par Explora RM Sur Poniente, Par Explora RM Sur Oriente, and Radio Cooperativa Ciencia.
