The Executive Directorate and Administrative Area of the Millennium Institute for Coastal Socio-Ecology (SECOS) recently presented the outcomes of the processes aimed at implementing a Crime Prevention Model, as well as the results from workshops and training sessions related to the Karin Law.
Through the consultancy carried out by the company Iceberg Risk Management and Insurance and the law firm Portaluppi, Guzmán y Bezanilla, work was conducted on the design and implementation of a Crime Prevention Model – Law No. 20.393 – starting in October 2024, with a final document to be presented this January.
“With this, our goal is to have a model that enables us to effectively address the challenges imposed by Law No. 20.393, which establishes criminal liability for legal entities, Law No. 21.595 on economic crimes, as well as the Penal Code,” said Pablo Fuentes, Executive Director of SECOS. “We hope these initiatives will allow us to properly manage the risk of economic crimes and the associated criminal liability for legal entities, in this case, our Corporation”.

In parallel, progress is also being made in developing a Protocol for the Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Workplace Harassment, and Workplace Violence (which will be incorporated into the Internal Rules of Order, Hygiene, and Safety presented in 2023), as well as in an Investigation and Sanction Procedure, taking into account the protective measures that must be adopted for those involved.
We have also participated in training sessions on this topic, led by our legal advisors Felipe González and José Olbrich, and the Chilean Safety Association (ACHS). The first session, held in August, focused on the legal aspects of this law, while the second, held in November, covered the “Main elements of Law 21.643 – Prevention of Sexual Harassment, Workplace Harassment, and Violence in the Workplace.”
“As an institute, we will continue working to adopt all the measures required by this important law, with the aim of ensuring that SECOS remains an environment of respect and personal consideration, where each person can reach their full potential,” concludes Fuentes.
